Alternating Current (AC)
Alternating current is defined as the flow of electrons that changes the direction periodically. Basically ac is used to deliver power to industries, houses, offices etc.

Generation of AC
1. By using alternators or generators to generate the alternating current. Generator to convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy.
2. Whenever conductor cuts magnetic flux to produce an electromotive force induced in a conductor that drives the electrons in conductor.

Generation of Alternating Current/Voltage Waveform in a Generator
1. Position (0 deg) rate of change of flux linkages in a conductor is minimum, hence voltage induced in a conductor is minimum.
2. Position (90 deg) rate of change of flux linkages in a conductor is maximum, hence voltage induced in a conductor is maximum.
3. Position (180 deg) rate of change of flux linkages in a conductor is minimum, hence voltage induced in a conductor is minimum.
4. Position (270 deg) rate of change of flux linkages in a conductor is maximum, hence voltage induced in a conductor is maximum in negative direction.
5. Position (360 deg) rate of change of flux linkages in a conductor is minimum, hence voltage induced in a conductor is minimum.


Direct Current (DC)
The current flows in constant direction is called direct current. Mainly direct current used in batteries.

Generation of DC
1. By using dc alternators to generate the direct current. The main difference between ac and dc alternator, dc alternators having commutator split rings instead of slip rings in ac alternators, remains all same. Commutator split rings to convert alternating current into unidirectional current.
2. Direct current mostly used for low voltage applications such as charging batteries, automotive applications and aircraft applications etc..
3. In negative direction commutator  split rings changes the rings direction, then current flowing through the load is same direction, hence unidirectional wave form is produced.

Generation of Unidirectional Current/Voltage 

By using filters to convert unidirectional current into direct current.
